Not all living organisms are as complicated as you are. The first organisms that existed on Earth were made up of just a single cell. There are still many organisms alive today that consist of only one cell. What is an organism that is made up of just one cell called? | A unicellular organism |
Is it a plant or an animal? | No, it is not a plant or an animal, as these are made up of lots of cells. |
What is an amoeba? | An amoeba is a unicellular organism that has no fixed shape. Amoebas look a bit like a blob of jelly. |
Where can amoebas be found? | Amoebas can be found in fresh water, salt water, wet soil and even inside animals |
Just like an animal cell, what does an amoeba consist of? | A cell membrane filled with cytoplasm. Inside the cell there is also a nucleus, which controls growth and reproduction. |
Label a diagram of an amoeba
How do amoebas move? | Amoebas move by changing the shape of their body. They can make part of their body move in the direction they want to travel. The rest of the cell then slowly follows. |
What do amoebas eat? | Amoebas eat algae, bacteria and plant cells. |
How do they eat? | They eat by surrounding tiny particles of food and forming a food vacuole. This is known as engulfing. The food vacuole then digests the food. |
How do amoebas reproduce? | To reproduce, an amoebas splits itself into two cells. |
What is this known as? | Binary fusion. |
What happens during binary fusion? | First, the nucleus divides. Then the cytoplasm divides, producing two identical cells. |
Draw a diagram of an amoeba reproducing
What is a euglena? | A euglena is a microscopic unicellular organism found in fresh water |
Label a diagram of a euglena
Like amoebas, what do euglenas contain? | Euglenas contain cytoplasm and a nucleus. However, they also have chloroplasts, which make them look green. |
How do the chloroplasts make food by photosynthesis? | The chloroplasts trap energy transferred from the sun |
What does the 'eye spot' in the euglena do? | The 'eye spot' detects light |
What is the tail-like structure which spins like a propeller, causing the euglena to 'swim' towards the light called? | The flagellum |
What does this allow the euglena to do? | Maximise the amount of food it makes |
What do euglenas eat? | When a euglena doesn't have enough light to make its own food, it looks for other things to eat. They eat other micro organisms, such as bacteria and algae, by surrounding and engulfing them. |
How do euglenas reproduce? | Like amoebas, euglenas reproduce by binary fission. |
