Why Use Promo's? | Promo's do not have to be created on a huge budget, or by an official director, anybody can pick up a camera and shoot their own promo. As an example, singer-songwriters who aren't famous create a music promo in order to accompany their song, and act as an aesthetic visual. Because of the advance of social media in the 21st century, creators putting out their content online, on sites such as YouTube, has attracted the attention of producers and have given the content creators opportunities in the wider music industry. As an example, Justin Bieber was discovered by Usher in 2009 who signed him to Island Def Jam Recordings. |
Relevance of promos now and who makes them? Big bands or independents? | Promo's are still relevant today as they help to create a brand's identity, and anyone can create them as a result of the advances of digital technology. Independent creators can have a large following on social media, for example, 'Musical Bethan' or Bethan Leadley on YouTube. Also big bands can also have a large following on social media, as well as being well established in the industry, such as One Direction. |
Well known promo directors – who are they and what makes their promos good? | An example of a well known promo director is Rik Codero, based in New York, he is known for applying unconventional techniques to his style of shooting, and was nominated for Video Director Of The Year at the 2009 BET Awards. In 2007, he shot a teaser trailer for 'Blue Magic', the first visual from Jay-Z's album 'American Gangster'. His audience extended to the millions and the video went viral, receiving a lot of attention towards the director himself. |
MTV vs Viral? | Launched in 1981, MTV is renowned for a 24/7 music channel that is dedicated to broadcasting the latest music videos, and promo's from every genre via a wide network. However, due to recent advances in technology over the past 10 or so years, 'viral' videos have become the most current way of discovering talent. As an example, Shawn Mendes used social media site Vine to gain recognition into the public eye by posting six second covers to the site. Since his six second cover of 'Drunk' by Ed Sheeran went viral in 2014, he has gained a large following and has released an album. |
How has digital technology opened up the opportunity for more people to make their own promos? | Digital technology has made a impact on today's media world, as it has allowed anybody to produce content and share it publicly, as it is so widely available today. Most people in our society own some form of digital camera, whether it be a DSLR or even just a mobile phone camera, meaning so many people have the opportunity to get out there and produce content. |
Advantages of promos for sales/profit? | Well made promos give artists the opportunity to sell their music as drawing attention to a music promo also draws attention to the song, bringing in more sales as a result. Home made promos also give ordinary people the opportunity to secure a recording contract, which is has become increasingly common, in the cases of Justin Bieber, Conor Maynard, Shawn Mendes, Troye Sivan and Joey Graceffa. |
Opinion of the Future of Promos? | Personally, I think digital technology has the potential to advance even further in terms of special effects within editing software, which could be made even more widely available to ordinary people, therefore anybody can have the potential to learn how to edit as a skill, meaning home made promos could begin to look professional and as if they were created with a large budget. |
