Questão Responda
Consider sonnets structure. Is the sonnet "What lips my lips have kiss and Where and Why" by Edna St. Vincent Millay a Shakespearean sonnet or a petrarchan sonnet? It is a petrarchan poem. It has a lyric style
What can be deduced about the speaker in "What lips my lips have kiss"? How does this speakers voice compare to the voice of the first person in Shakespeare sonnet 17 We can assume as the speaker talks about love affairs with men that they are female, though of course they could be a gay man. Because the writer is female it is more likely that she writes from her own experiences and thus the speaker is female. This speaker is more dark and lonely while in sonnet 17 the speaker is in love and admiring the virtues of there love. This speaker is speaking as if to warn others to not let love get away while the sonnet speaks of bright and happy love found. they are two opposites speaking on the same subject, love. This speaker takes a negative tone on the ability of love to last, unlike sonnet 17 which believes love can be immortal
Does "What lips my lips have kissed" cover the same subject matter as sonnet 17? yes but in an opposite way. both speak of love but this poem speaks of the loneliness that comes from love lost and forgotten and sonnet 17 speaks of the romantic love as a happy thing. this poem is much more weary and less optimistic about love.
does the speaker in "What lips my lips have kissed" use similar imagery as Shakespeare such as ideas from the natural world? yes. the speaker compares herself to a tree that has lost its leaves in winter and all the birds have left for other trees. she constantly uses the seasons to describe the different phases in life as well. They are similar to Shakespeare ideas, but once again in a darker, more mature sense.
What do you think the poet of "What lips my lips have kissed" is trying to say? She recognizes that she once had love but it was fleeting. she is now seeing that something important has slipped away without her seeing and is reminiscent of her lost love. It seems as it she wishes to warn other women to notice the importance of love that lasts before is to late and winter has come.
What is shakespeare trying to say in the last 6 lines of sonnet 17? he is saying that the fair youth's beauty will never faid as the writer has spoken of it in this poem. They shall never loose the beauty that is rightfully theirs becuase as long as people read the lines, as long as the poem lasts, so shall the life of the youth.
Why does Shakespeare talk about summer in this poem? what is the purpose? the use of summer is to describe that even the most beautiful things are not perfect and must come to an end. Sometimes heaven is too hot, or the sun gets hidden by the clouds. all that is fair will someday not be so, whether by time or by chance, but that is not so for the fair youth. summer is flawed, but the youth beauty will never fade, but only grow with time.
What is the importance of the comparison of the sun to an eye in line 5? this is personification, the adding of human characteristics. It starts to bring the focus to the human face, reminding us to think of the most lovely face in all the world
what can we say about the descriptive langage in this poem compared to that of first poem for you? this poem uses figurative language, descriptions of a tree for example that isnt actually there. firts poem for you uses literal descriptions of nature in her lovers tattoos that she actually sees.
