Monocots vs Dicots vs Eudicots Monocots: fibrous root system, consisting of a mat of thin roots, vascular bundles scattered throughout its tissue, parallel veins Dicots: taproot system consisting of one thick central root with thin branches, bundles of vascular tissue arranged in a ring, netted veins
What is the function of xylem and phloem? -Xylem transports water and solutes from the roots to the leaves - phloem transports food from the leaves to the rest of the plant
Types of Roots Taproot System: found mainly in dicots consists of a large primary root that has smaller branches Fibrous Root System: found mainly in monocots, consists of many equally sized branch roots
Do aquatic plants have thick or thin cuticles? - thin, they dont need a thick cuticle to protect against water loss
Plant Tissues and Functions Dermal tissue: protective outer covering, protects against water loss Vascular tissue: supports the plant body and transports water and nutrients (xylem and phloem) Ground tissue: produces and stores sugars, help support the plant
Organelles in Plant Cells Plasma Membrane: controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell, protects the interior of the cell from the outside environment Vacuole: "storage container", can hold food or even waste Chloroplast: absorbs sunlight Cell Wall: structural support and protection Mitochondria: power house of the cell Nucleus: brain of the cell Ribosomes: makes proteins for cell functions Golgi Apparatus: modifying, sorting and packing proteins Endoplasmic Reticulum: manufacturing and packaging system
Haploid Spores A gametophyte is the haploid multicellular stage in the alternation of generations life cycle of plants and algae. It develops from a spore by mitotic cell division. Spores are the products of meiosis in sporophytes. Gametophytes produce haploid gametes by mitosis.
