Questão Responda
Who did research into conformity? Solomon Asch?
Who did Asch recruit for his experiment and how many ppts did he use? 123 male american undergraduate students.
What was the procedure of Asch's experiment? Participants were shown two cards at a time. One with a 'standard line' and one with three 'comparison lines'. One of these was the same length and the other two were clearly different. Participants were then asked to say which one was the same.
How many confederates were used in Asch's study? 6-8
How many trials were there in Asch's study? 18 trials - 12 of which were critical.
What was the overall conformity rate? overall rate was 36.8%
How many participants did not conform? 25% 75% conformed at least once
What variations did Asch carry out to further investigate conformity? Group Size, Unanimity, task difficulty
How did group size affect conformity rates? When the group size was increased up to 3, the conformity also increased.
How did unanimity affect conformity rates? When there was another dissenter, whether they were right or wrong, conformity dropped to 9%
How did the task difficulty affect conformity rates? Conformity increased when the task difficulty was harder. Lucas et al proved this.
What is a limitation of Asch's study? His study could be suggested it was a child of it's time because Perrin and Spencer repeated the study with engineering students in the UK where only 1 student conformed out of 396 trials.
What is another limitation of Asch's study? The situations was artificial and the act of identifying lines was a trivial matter that did not mirror real life situations.
What is one other limitation of Asch's study? There is a limited application of findings in this study because he only experimented on males. There is evidence to suggest that women are more conformist as well as collectivist cultures such as China.
