The Constitution Provides... The constitution provides that the states' constitutions, parliaments and laws as in place in 1900 and subsequently amended, remain in force so long as they are consistent with the commonwealth constitution (sections 106,107,108)
Each State... Each state is equally represented in the senate (12 senators each) and every bill has to be approved by the senate (section 7)
Commonwealth Power... Commonwealth power is limited to the subject matters laid out in section 51 and all unspecified areas are residual powers of the states.
States can challenge... States can challenge commonwealth legislation in the high court (section 76)
Constitution Altered For the constitution to be altered, the people in at least 4 of the 6 states must votes in favour of the change (section 128)
The Commonwealth The commonwealth cannot pass a law that discriminates against a particular state in matters of trade or tax (section 99)
Commonwealth is Obliged The commonwealth is obliged to defend a state against invasion and to protect against domestic unrest (civil war) (section 119)
