Define hunger. Discomfort that is caused by lack of food or a craving for food.
Define satiation. The process that leads to the termination of eating, which may be accompanied by the feeling of satisfaction.
Define satiety. The feeling of fullness which persists after eating, potentially suppressing further energy intake.
Give the site and action on appetite of; Ghrelin, Peptide YY, Pancreatic Polypeptide and Leptin Ghrelin-stomach, increases appetite. Peptide YY- Ileum & colon decrease appetite . Pancreatic Polypeptide-Pancreas, Decrease appetite. Leptin-Adipose tissue, Decrease appetite
Give some reasons for decreased ghrelin release when we eat. Also give the nervous pathway the effect of ghrelin is passed down. Stomach distention causes less ghrelin to be released. Effect of ghrelin passed down the vagal afferent pathway to the brain.
When PYY was measured in a fasted state what was found? Obese people had lower PYY than normal weighted people.
What hormone would increase after we have eaten a fatty meal? CCK
What happens to leptin levels over time. Why is this? No real fluctuation within our body as it is released from the adipose tissue which doesn't change over time unlike ghrelin which is controlled by stomach distention.
What part of our brain is responsible for combining the signals from all round out body to control appetite? Hypothalamus
