What is a solar system? A Solar system is the collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit round the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets.
What is a moon? The moon is the biggest and brightest object in the night sky.
What are stars? Stars are massive burning balls of hydrogen gas.Hydrogen is eplosive but the light and heat that comes from stars is not normal hydrogen explosions.
What is the Milky Way? The Milky Way is the galaxy that contains our Solar System. Its name "milky" is derived from its appearance as a dim glowing band arching across the night sky whose individual stars cannot be distinguished by the naked eye.
What are artifical satellites? This is different from the natural satellites, or moons, that orbit planets, dwarf planets and even asteroids. Artificial satellites are used to study the Earth, other planets, to help us communicate, and even to observe the distant Universe.
What are shooting stars? Shooting stars are small, rapidly moving meteor burning up on entering the earth's atmosphere.
What are comets? Comets are celestial objects consisting of a nucleus of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a ‘tail’ of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun.
What is Geocentric model? In astronomy, the Geocentric model (also known as Geocentrism, or the Ptolemaic system) is a superseded description of the universe with the Earth at the center.
What is a Retrograde model? Retrograde motion is an APPARENT change in the movement of the planet through the sky. It is not REAL in that the planet does not physically start moving backwards in its orbit. It just appears to do so because of the relative positions of the planet and Earth and how they are moving around the Sun.
What are Lunar eclipses? An eclipse in which the moon appears darkened as it passes into the earth's shadow.
What are Solar eclipses? Solar eclipses are eclipses in which the sun is obscured by the moon.
What is an Orbit? The gravitational fields around planets, moons and stars are often strong enough to trap other masses so that they travel continously around them in a path known as an Orbit. |
