Aluminium | Pure metal - soft and malleable. Almost useless in pure form so always alloyed. Many different alloys for diff apps. Extremely lightweight - aerospace industry. Good conductor. Requires constant annealing during work. Does not withstand great loads. |
Copper | Extremely good conductor of heat and electricity. Malleable and ductile and can be worked cold - but requires constant annealing when working. Can be drawn easily drawn into wire and used extensively in electronics and plumbing. Mustn't be joined to iron or electrolysis happens! Easily cut and machined. |
Zinc | Easily worked, forms oxide layer like aluminium. Corrosion resistant and used in galvanising which protects steel from rusting. Car bodies dipped in it to prevent corrosion. Used as an element in some soft solder fluxes. Low melting point, used in die casting. |
Stainless Steel | Steel alloyed with chromium and some nickel. Highly corrosion resistant. Expensive and hard to cut. Used in kitchen utensils, pipes and medical tools. |
Duralumin | Alloy of aluminium, copper and manganese. Very lightweight and strong at the same time. Ductile and malleable. Used in aerospace industry. Work hardens but also age hardens over time. |
Brass | Alloy of copper and zinc. Very corrosion resistant. Excellent for casting and machining. Harder than copper but can be joined using soft and hard soldering. Good heat and electrical conductivity. Used in central heating valves, ships propellers, plumbing fittings and electrical components. |
Mild Steel | Carbon Content 0.15 - 0.3% Versatile with many engineering apps Easily worked, cut, machined, heated and hammered. Can't be heat treated apart from 'case hardening'. Ferrous - can rust. |
Medium Carbon Steel | Applications such as garden tools. Can be heat treated to alter properties. Ferrous metal and so can rust. Could be painted or galvanised. |
High Carbon Steel | Used for things which need to be much harder, e.g. Hammer heads, cutting tools, drills, machine tools. Can be heat treated. Many eng apps - versatile. |
White Cast Iron | Not easy to work with - hard and brittle. Will shatter if dropped. Almost impossible to weld. High thermal conductivity. Cookware/braking systems in cars. |
Grey Cast Iron | More useful than White. Can be cast into intricate shapes. Self lubricating with 'free graphite' Will shatter if dropped. Almost impossible to weld. High thermal conductivity. Cookware/braking systems in cars. |
