Allusion A reference to a piece of literature, art, history, or event outside of the text.
Conflict a struggle between two opposing forces in a story.
4 Different Types of Conflict Man vs. Man Man vs. Self Man vs. Society Man vs. Nature
Characterization How a character is portrayed in a piece of literature (direct or indirect) a) What a character reveals through speech, thoughts, or actions. b) Physical appearance c) what others say about the character d) Narrator making direct comments
Diction The choice of words that an author makes. Another term for Vocabulary.
Abstract Diction Ideas that are intangible. Ex: Love, happiness, etc.
Concrete Diction Specific, tangible words. Ex: Water bottle, soap.
Foreshadowing The use of clues to hint at future events in a story.
Imagery colorful and descriptive language used to appeal to one or more of the five senses. Visual Imagery: Sight. Aural/Auditory Imagery: Sound Olfactory Imagery: Smell Gustatory Imagery: Taste Tactile Imagery: Touch, Tangibility.
Verbal Irony A character says one thing but means the opposite. Sarcasm.
Dramatic Irony When the audience understands more about the events in a story than a character.
Situational Irony When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected to happen.
Motif a dominant pattern of repetition of subjects, objects, or ideas that runs through a piece of literature. Often a motif can assume a symbolic importance.
Narrator Anyone who recounts a story to someone else. Ex: Third person
Novella A short novel, usually under 150 pages.
Plot diagram the sequence of events in the story (exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.)
Point of View the perspective from which an author lets the reader view the action of a narrative.
Setting the location and time period where the story takes place.
Symbol repeated image, idea, or object within the text that stands for something other than itself.
Theme a timeless and universal idea that is expressed throughout a work. It must be more than one word.
Register refers to how formal or informal the language and tone of the text is.
