Strengths of the Social Approach - Had a big impact on the way we understand social behavior of humans - Real life scenarios
Weaknesses of the Social Approach - Social norms and values change over time, eg. Piliavin et Al, attitudes towards race and gender were different back then - Hard to abide to ethical guidelines eg. a lot of deception
Milgram Background information Milgram wanted to test out obedience because he was from Jewish decent and was interested in why people in World War 2 conformed to killing so many people
Milgram Aim To investigate the process of obedience and power of an authoritative figure, even if it meant hurting someone else
Milgram methods and types of data -Controlled setting -Observation - Quantitative data (maximum level of shock the subject administered to the victim) -Qualitative data (recordings, photographs and notes through a one way mirror)
Milgram Sample Self selected sample - got paid $4.50 for just turning up, 40 men aged 20-50 from various occupational backgrounds
Milgram Procedure - No controlled condition so it is an observation not experiment -Told the experiment was how punishment affects learning (deception) - shock worked once on teacher to prove it wouldnt cause damage -every time learner got an answer wrong they would get a shock which increased with each mistake -
Milgram Results -Over half the participants administered shocks -All 40 gave shocks to 300 volts -Participants showed signs of extreme tension
Milgram Ethics -all participants were debriefed - deceived by cover story and therefore informed consent wasnt gained - Milgram denied harming them
