Block Modelling | Useful to help determine shape, dimension and surface details of a product. Have no working/moving parts and are manufactured from a block of material like ABS, Acrylic or Styrofoam which makes them look like the real thing. Main disadvantage is setup cost. Main advantage is how using different sizes and shapes can literally allow people to get a feel of how the product will turn out. |
Stereo Lithography | A laser is used to solidify a thin layer attached to a platform in a bath of resin/liquid plastic polymer. The platform moves down and the next layer is built up. CAD is thus turned into a real prototype quite quickly. Saves time and money and allows changes to be quickly incorporated. Allows the client to see the product throughout the design process. However as it is not a real product, there is a danger that elements of the design can be missed. Photoreactive resin expensive. |
3D Printing/Fused Deposition Modelling | Where a nozzle moves around squirting out a thin string of molten polymer, building up each bit on top of the next. Similar to stereo lithography but much cheaper as it only needs a normal thermoplastic not special resin. Normally lower resolution than stereolithography. |
Selective Laser Sintering | Pretty much the same as stereolithography, but where an extremely powerful laser melts and fuses powder. The platform moves down and the next layer is made. The advantage is that in this way, metal or plastic powder can be used and models can be made out of metal or a preferred polymer rather than a special resin. |
