What are the 7 possible purposes of suffering? | Test of faith, achieve goals, teach us a lesson, make us more appreciative, make you a better person, indicate something's wrong & part of God's mysterious plan. |
What is the inconsistent triad? | Belief that God is omnibenevolent, omniscient & omnipotent yet evil exists. |
Explain the inconsistent triad. | If God's all loving he wouldn't let us suffer, if he's all knowing he would know when evil is about to happen and if he's all powerful he would be able to stop suffering so he can't be all three. |
What is a theodicy? | An attempt to defend god in the face of the fact that evil and suffering exist. |
What is evil? | The opposite of good, a force/negative power that is destructive against God. |
What are the 3 explanations of evil? | 1) An impersonal force, 2) personal force, 3) psychological phenomenon. |
What is the free will defence? | God designed humans to be free and have a choice. This means he knew we could chose right or wrong. God can't interfere when we choose wrongly for then we wouldn't be free. |
What is the Iranaen Theodicy? | God designed the world to include evil, no pleasure without pain. It is all a learning process. |
What is the Augustinian theodicy? | God created the world perfectly but evil came from the fall of Adam & Eve, as we're all descendants of them we're all punished. |
