Pavan An instrumental dance from the Renaissance period. Slow, with two beats in a bar.
Galliard An instrumental dance from the Renaissance period. Often paired with the Pavan, lively and has 3 beats in a bar.
Motet Usually - but not exclusively - from the Renaissance period, a motet is a sacred choral work, polyphonic in texture with Latin text.
Air/Ayre A song or simple melody in Renaissance music, this can refer to a lute song, performed with a soloist and a lute accompanist.
Ballett From the Renaissance period, a ballett is a type of madrigal, sung a Capella. It is in strophic form and features repeated fa la las.
Madrigal A secular work from the Renaissance period, it is a vocal composition, sung a Capella and makes use of imitation.
Anthem A sacred choral piece, sung in English and is usually a Capella.
Chorale German hymn tune, homophonic in texture.
Serial A 20th century method of composition invented by Schoenberg in which the 12 notes of the chromatic scale are organised into a series or tone row.
Nationalist Music which incorporates elements of the traditional music of the composers home country, which evokes a mood or which deals with themes relating to that country.
Electronic Dance Music Usually heard in clubs where the DJ combines various tracks into one smooth mix.
Contemporary Jazz An umbrella term for all kinds of jazz being played now (from the 80s onwards).
