Resumo de Recurso

Questão Responda
"Love is a child ever crying" Personification and metaphor: Love is demanding and ungrateful like a child With proper nurture, it can grow well Love only causes sorrow (Wroth's own child died) Contrast with 'Cupid' also seen as a baby -Love isn't what you expect it to be 'crying': Love will never result in happiness
"His desires have no measure" Love is selfish: Keeps wanting more Links with "never satisfied with having" and "slighter are his gifts, his favours lighter" Repetition of sentiment shows Wroth is fixed in her beliefs. Wife is usually taken advantage of
"What he promiseth he breaketh" Inconsistent Breaks his vows, connotes to sin We should not retain hope or trust in love Links to breaking his vows of marriage and commitments
Repetition of words like "nothing" and "never" Wroth has a wholly negative view on love
Future tense (stanza 3) Love is predictable
"Feathers are as firm in staying, Wolves no fiercer in their preying" Juxtaposition between feathers and wolves. Describes the deceitfulness of love (Appears as soft and delicate as feather, but is actually a wild wolf) Compares love of men to wolves, wild beasts, which are cruel and ruthless
"Nor seek him so given to flying" Last line, and word 'flying' implies love is volatile, and will quickly leave you for another, so do not go after love Repetition of 'flying' and 'crying' like 1st stanza, symbolizes is an endless, boring, predictable loop of selfishness
Enjambment, Caesura, Enjambment (Stanza 4) Love is impractical
Context Unhappy marriage Husband died, leaving her in debt Child died soon after, causing sorrow, and her losing her estate 17th century, men were harsh on women
Tone Advising, warning and confident
Structure AABB - Love is predictable and boring Wroth is fixed in her opinions Sense of control (emphasized, with end-stop quatrains) gives poem a 'contained' and 'claustrophobic' feeling: Love is loss of freedom
