Thomas Cromwell 1485-1540
Where did he first find employment? In the household of Cardinal Wolsey
Where did Cromwell attend in 1524? Inns of Court
When was he elected a member of parliament? 1529
When did he become a member of the Royal Council? 1531
When did he take over the King's divorce? 1532
What did he achieve between 1532 and 1536? He devised a strategy for divorce. Drafted a series of Acts that destroyed the power of Rome. Created the Church of England. Gave Henry unprecedented power and status as a monarch.
Why was he executed? After the failed marriage between Anne of Cleves and Henry, Cromwell was in a vulnerable position. A faction formed against him and Catherine Howard spread talk that he was not carrying out the divorce quick enough. This angered Henry enough to give the order for execution.

What titles did Wolsey hold? Archbishop of York, Cardinal, Papal Legate, Bishop of Durham, Bishop of Winchester
What was he guilty of? Absenteesism and pluralism
What was the Amicable Grant? A hugely unpopular tax in 1525 that was made to try and finance renewed warfare in France. It was to tax the laity at 1/6 of the value of all their goods and the clergy at 1/3. It caused mass rebellions
Why had Wolsey lost Henry's confidence by 1529? His failure to secure a divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Failure in foreign policy- England was marginalised and isolated. The Boleyn faction was hinting that he was delaying divorce proceedings. His reputation and personal ambitions.

When did Henry decide he wanted a divorce from Catherine of Aragon? 1527
When did Henry and Anne secretly marry? 1533
Why was she executed? She did not produce a male heir and Henry had become besotted with Jane Seymour. Anne was arrested on charges of adultery and witchcraft. She was sent to the Tower of London and executed in 1536
