Questão Responda
What are some problems plants could face while living in the rain forest? - Large trees block the sunlight - Underground is a network of crowded roots - lack of nutrients on forest floor - The rain forest is packed with plants - it is extremely crowded
What do plants compete for? - Nutrients: help the plant grow and make food. Minerals to make all the chemicals needed in the cells. - sunlight: for photosynthesis - space: for leaves and roots to grow Water: for photosynthesis and to keep the tissues rigid.
Why would a plant living underneath a large, tall tree need to be well adapted? Tall, big trees and plants take up a lot of sunlight, and space and minerals and nutrients from the soil. Therefore plants which live beneath them need adaptations to survive.
Why don't plants shed seeds directly beneath themselves? If the seeds land near by, the parent plant will be in competition with its own offspring. Because the plant is more developed, large and settled,it will take most of the water and minerals from the soil. If the seeds land near, the offspring will be in direct competition.
How do plants compete: during flowering time? One way plants compete during flowering time is that they flower some time before all the other plants. Small plants found in woodland often do this because light is let through the leafless trees, and very little water is taken by dormant trees.
Which plants use the above method? snowdrops, anemones, and bluebells all flower, disperse their seeds, and die out again before the trees are in full bloom.
How are roots adapted to survive? Some plants have deep, long roots that get water from far underground, while others have shallow, far stretching roots to get the maximum amount of water from the surface.
How does size help a plant to survive? - some plants grow over the top of plants and other things to get maximum sunlight - large leaves to take advantage of the sunlight the plant does get
How is the strangler fig adapted to survive? The tree grows around a host tree, "strangling" it by not allowing it to get the nutrients and sunlight it needs. It grows down, from up above the forest canopy. It eliminates competition.
Give some examples of how some plants disperse their seeds. Dandelion: the wind carries the little parachute like seeds far distances Sycamore seeds: the wind blows them away, they act like mini helicopters. coconut: can be carried by water.
Give some qualities of a successful competitor - seed dispersal → small, light seeds easily carried by wind → mini explosion to spread out seeds →fruits which are sticky or covered in hooks get stuck to the fur of a passing animal → fruits with special adaptations for flight to carry the seeds → seeds dispersed by water - coconut
