Define natural hazard. | An event of processes which causes loss of life and/or damage to property which causes disruption to human activity. |
Give examples of natural hazards. | - Earthquakes - Volcanoes - Droughts - flooding - tsunamis |
What is a primary effect? | Primary effects occur as a direct impact of the natural hazard. For example, a primary effect of the ground shaking would be buildings falling. |
What is a secondary affect? | A secondary affect is an effect that occurs as a result of the primary effect. Example: A primary effect of the ground shaking is building collapsing. The secondary effect is homelessness, as peoples homes are destroyed |
There are ___ types of natural Hazard. They are. . . | There are two types of natural hazard. They are: 1) hydro meteorological 2) geophysical. |
Define hydro meteorological. | A) Those caused by running water and it's processes. - those associated with or caused by weather patterns. |
Define geophysical. | Those caused by the Earth's processes. There are two types of geophysical effects, too: external and internal processes of tectonic origin. |
Define geomorphological. | Geo morphological processes are natural mechanisms of weathering, erosion and deposition. |
What are: LICS? HICs? | Low income country. High income country. |
How would a LIC react to natural disasters, compared to HICS? | HICS have the technological and economical advantage, and so are able to monitor and prepare for earthquakes, as well as respond to them, much more efficiently than LICS. Therefore, LICS normally have more damage. |
Why would LICS suffer more damage? | Poor communication - people may not know what to do in an event of disaster poor construction - more people die - clearing up is difficult as is replacement of buildings because there is not much money - evacuations, etc. hard to put into action because of limited resources.. |
How would HICS respond to a natural disaster? | HICS have the money & resources to get medical aid to the appropriate places; civilians as well as governments have emergency plans in place to deal with disasters; they have enough money and resources to rebuild buildings. |
How do LICS respond to Natural disasters? | LICS do not have much money nor resources to have proper healthcare, and rely on abroad aid, which is inadequate and often too slow. Poor communication means that there isn't many emergency procedures, and more buildings would have fallen because of poor construction, meaning more deaths and rebuilding. |
