                          1. Europeans exploited Africa's resources.
                            1. Including people (slaves).
                          2. In the 1960s, many African countries gained independence.
                            1. Nigeria became fully independent from the UK in 1960.
                              1. Bitter power struggles resulted in dictatorships & civil war.
                                1. Lack of political stability affected Nigeria's development.
                                  1. Led to widespread corruption.
                              2. Only since 1990, that Nigeria has had a stable government.
                                1. Several countries are now investing in Nigeria.
                              3. Environmental
                                1. Nigeria's natural environment form a series of bands across the country.
                                  1. Reflects the decreasing rainfall towards the N in West Africa,
                                    1. These environmental regions extend to the E & W of Nigeria,
                                      1. To the N is the Sahel & Sahara Desert.
                                    2. Regional
                                      1. Huge variations in levels of wealth and development.
                                        1. Encourages widespread rural-urban migration.
                                          1. Urban areas have a greater share of public services & facilities.
                                            1. 60% children in urban areas attend secondary school, only 36% in rural.
                                          2. Variation in GDP per person.
                                            1. Generally higher in the S, due to the Niger Delta, higher rainfall & oil reserves.
                                              1. Lower in the semi-arid N, with drought, desertification & lack of resources.
                                                1. The growing threat from the militant Islamic group Boko Haram is limiting economic growth.
