Meropenem
  1. What is it? Drug class
    1. Antibiotic
    2. What is used for? Indication
      1. Severe infections
        1. Pneumonia
          1. Sepsis
            1. Meningitis
            2. How is it given
              1. Intravenous
              2. Dose
                1. • 0.5–1 g by IV bolus over 5 minutes or IV infusion over 15–30 minutes 8-hourly OR • (febrile neutropenia) 1 g by IV bolus over 5 minutes or IV infusion over 15–30 minutes 8-hourly OR • (meningitis) 2 g by IV bolus over 5 minutes or IV infusion over 15–30 minutes 8-hourly
                2. Side effects
                  1. Rash
                    1. Hypersensitivity
                      1. Headache
                        1. Nausea
                          1. Liver dysfunction
                            1. Can cause sodium and water retention
                          2. Adverse effects
                            1. Thrombocytopenia
                              1. Anaphylaxis
                                1. Seizure
                                2. Nursing considerations
                                  1. Measure fluid output
                                    1. Observe for skin rashes
                                      1. Assess PIVC
                                        1. Patient education incl. information about hypersensitivity [if other drug allergy]
                                          1. Assess for nausea / vomiting
                                            1. Pain assessment
                                              1. Side effect headache
                                              2. Monitor vital signs
                                                1. Assess if S&S for infection are improving eg. temperature, heart rate, blood pressure
