Scientific Voice
1. Objective
  1. It describes the events that occurred rather than what people felt or thought about it
2. Precise
  1. It uses qualified language and avoids understatement or exaggeration
3. Concise
  1. Conveying information in short, clearly understandable sentences without any unnecessary terminology
4. Simple
  1. Short sentences should be use wherever possible
5. Free of bias, personal opinion or persuasion
scientific writing
1. Formal Language
  1. formal language used in more official situations such as speeches as opposed to the common language used in text messages and amongst friends
    1. e.g The bacteria passed away.
      1. e.g. The results do not
      2. e.g. we guessed that
      3. e.g. previous researcher were slackand missed
2. Objective Writing
  1. e.g. The results showed
  2. e.g. this produced a pungent odour
  3. e.g. The golden bowerbird
3. Accurate Language
  1. e.g. this phenomenon has not been reported previously
  2. e.g. the magnesium burnt vigorously.
Unscientific Writing
1. Subjective writing
  1. e.g. the results were weird/bad/atrocious/wonderful
  2. e.g. this produced a disgusting odour
  3. e.g. this breathtakingly beautiful golden bowerbird
2. Exaggeration
  1. e.g. the object weighed a huge amount
  2. e.g. millions of ants swarmed over the..
  3. e.g. the magnesium exploded into flames
3. Everyday language
  1. e.g. the bacteria passed away
  2. e.g. the results do not
  3. e.g. we guessed that
active voice
1. in the active voice, the subject is doing the action
  1. e.g. we used a pH meter to measure pH
passive voice
1. in the passive voice, the subject is receiving the action
  1. e.g. the pH was recorded with a pH meter
