Prenatal Periods
  1. Germinal period- period of the Zygote
    1. period of rapid cell replication
      1. conception till implantation (end of second week)
        1. formation of the blastocyst with two layers
          1. outer cell mass: trophoblast layer
            1. inner cell mass: embryonic disk
          2. Embryonic period
            1. implantation till the end of the eight week of gestation
              1. eight week- movement begins and bones begin to harder
              2. basic organs are formed (organogenesis) and embryo responds to direct stimulation
                1. embryonic disk is differentiated into three cell layers
                  1. ectoderm- nervous system, skin and hair
                    1. mesoderm- muscles, bones, circulatory system and internal organs
                      1. endoderm- digestive system, lungs, urinary tract and glands
                    2. Foetal period- period of the foetus
                      1. organs take their final forms and begin to function (histogenesis)
                        1. divided into trimesters (3 periods of 3 months)
                          1. begins two thirds of the way through the first trimester and ends at birth (8th week - birth)
