What is communication?
1. It is the sending or receiving of information
  1. Four forms:
    1. Oral Communication
      1. 1 to 1
        Doctor telling their patient about their results
      2. Phone Call
        Organising an appoinment
      3. Video Call (Skype)
        Talking to a patient who may not be able to see their practisioner face to face.
      4. When is this effective?
        When information needs to be shared immediately
        If you want to build a good relationship with your patient
        When you need to communicate sensitively
        If your patient has reading difficulties
    2. Computerised Communication
      1. Emails
        Orgainisng an appointment
      2. Faxes
        Sending results
      3. Text Messages
        Organising an appointment
      4. Computer Check-ins
        Saving time for reception
      5. When is this effective?
        When information needs to be shared quickly
        When information needs to be accessed in different places (at home or at work)
        When you need to be reminded of information in your daily life.
    3. Written Communication
      1. Posters
        Important information that can be read in a waiting room
      2. Leaflets
        Important infomation to be read at home
      3. Letters
        Results from a test
      4. When is this effective?
        When information needs to be recorded
        When there are instructions that need to be followed
        When patients have difficulty hearing
        When you require a hard copy
    4. Special Measures
      1. Braille
        Communicating with a patient that is blind
      2. Makaton
        Communicating with a patient with learning difficulties
      3. British Sign
        Communicating with a patient that is deaf
      4. Alphabet Boards
        Communicating with a patient that has trouble speaking
      5. When is this effective?
        When a patient requires assistance communicating
