Listening and Pronunciation in Phonetics
  1. Word boundaries

    Anotações:

    • They show graphically what it's like to be unable to hear the gap between words or to hear them in the wrong place
    • Example:  "Landlords: We have ten ants looking for good quality homes".
    1. Simplification through Connected Speech

      Anotações:

      • Linking of the final consonants to the following word  is one of the four features of connected speech which students have to practice and learn. 
      • Examples:  -Next please -I don't know -That car is new -That's my car
      1. Assimilation
        1. Elision
          1. Liaison
          2. Reception or Production

            Anotações:

            • Listening activities are not enough. Students must speak as it forces them to produce their speech.
            1. Accommodation

              Anotações:

              • Listener has to be flexible in their expectations of sounds. Through the written medium, the teacher can show them the kind of flexibility that is needed. 
              • Written examples for the student to indentify the meaning:  I hafta (have to) go to work tooday (today).

                1. Micro-listening

                  Anotações:

                  • Focuses on very small segments of an audio piece to notice the different characteristics of speech
                  1. Audio editing

                    Anotações:

                    • Select segments of an audio piece to focus on: listen at different speeds, rewind, and repeat. 
                    1. Acoustic drill

                      Anotações:

                      • Identify common characteristics of their audio text that are confusing. Review, clarify, and give more examples of the feature.
