  1. There isn't a strong structure however this could symbolise the weak structureless lies that the person repeats over and over again.
2. Imagery
  1. 'heavy herringbone from oxfam' this imagery produces an image of a dainty young woman who then wear a suit that is fit for a larger man showing the different extremes into which she transforms into.
3. Meaning
  1. The meaning of this poem was the show the extent to which the people to be seen as normal or to live their life the way they want to live it. it also shows the way that people are judged even thought the people aren' normal themselves.
4. Language
  1. The words 'slack rope-end' is suggests that she has no control over her life and the lies in which she tells as she doesn't understand why she lies like she does.
5. Effect.
  1. The effect of this poem to teach people about the different way in which we shouldn't judge people. by using the different language and calling her a liar an talking about the different lies in which she tells represents the extremity of what people do to get the life that they wont. it could also be effective as it shows how people feel lonely by lying as she has 'stolen' a child for her company.

  1. 'Finger burning pungent brands on flesh' this suggests that she is hurt every time she is touched by this person as it reminds her of the loving times they had together as it doesn't matter what she is doing she will always love them.

  1. The meaning of this poem is to show Duffy's unchanging love for one of her previous partners as she will always lover her.

  1. she creates images of this lover being very dangerous comparing her to 'fire', 'water and also she was referring her to the emptiness of 'air' and the strong nature of 'rock'

  1. The meaning of this poem is to show the way that people are always wishing to go to another country away from England with the horrible weather.

  1. Carol writes 'the other country' when the stated line this shows the memories in which are half rememeberd of the countries of which were visited but some details are now fogotten

  1. 'English rain' this imagery creates a relateable image for English readers as it can be a reminder of many days in England.

  1. This is effective as it is relatable as it is also nostalgic for the audience as we have all felt this before.

  1. The struture is fairly straight forward as this is to represent the simple mind of a child. The first 2 stanzas have 8 lines and the last 2 have 8 to show the change in a child's mind.
2. Meaning
  1. This poem was written to show the change in the way a child thinks as they grow older through primary school.
3. Effect
  1. This poem had a very positive affect as it was very memorable for an audience such as ourselves as she wanted to relate it to everyone's childhood.
4. language
  1. The line 'the air tasted of electricity' is figurative as it reflects to the way in whcih the children are 'impatient to grow. the reference to 'electricity' hints at the excitement the children feel about what lies ahead. The word choices of the stanza hints at danger, uncertainty and the beginnings of sexual awakenings for the children.
5. Imagery
  1. 'You could travel up the blue Nile' this was very effective imagery as it was the imagery as it shows the clear imagination of the child as this teacher was seen as a sort of magician as they thought that she was powerful as the imagery created a vibrant image of the bright blue river.

  1. In this poem there are 4 stanzas which each consist of 4 lines this can be related to the poet as she had 4 brothers which she is talking about in the poem.
2. Meaning
  1. In this poem she is talking about her brothers who she know longer keeps in touch with as they have grown older and now rarely see each other.
  2. She speaks about all the memories which she can remember about her childhood with these boys.
3. Imagery
  1. the imagery in which she creates are images of things such as;
    1. the rough areas in which she grew up 'slept in a bed with these for men'. the family didn't have a lot of money and the children had to share a bed in the house.
    2. 'one day I will day for a box and watch the shoulder it' she creates an image of her mothers funeral as she wonder about if her brothers would turn up. it also creates a image of what she wants to see as she wants to see herself doing better than them being able to pay for the coffin and to see their reactions.
4. Language
  1. Carol writes 'Much in common' this is sarcastic when talking about this topic as she never fully fitted in with her brothers as she never had the same interests. by writing this she is suggesting the alienation of that she would have felt during her younger years.
5. Effect
  1. This poem has a very positive effect as it shows her childhood at home living with her brothers. it is also effective as it suggests the different types of living during this period in time as this shows how far she has come to be this famous poem.
