Vertebrates
animals that have a backbone
they belong to the phylum chordata
Invertebrates
animals that don't have a backbone
they are both divided into smaller groups
characteristics to group vertibrates
the way they absorb oxygen for respiration
Fish have gills
other groups of vertebrates have lungs
some vertebrates reproduce using external fertilisation
this is where the adult female releases her eggs into the water where they are fertilised by sperm released by an adult male
other vertebrates reproduce using internal fertilisation
many vertebrates in this group then lay eggs
Other characteristics
Homeotherms
an animal that keeps its body temperature more constant than the surroundings, and often warmer, by releasing heat from reactions in their body
poikilotherms
body temperature varies with the temperature of their surroundings
