TYPES OF MUSCLE
Voluntary
Under our conscious control
Skeletal muscles e.g. biceps
Involuntary
Work automatically, no conscious commands
Smooth muscles e.g blood vessels
Cardiac
Involuntary
Works constantly with no rest
CONNECTIVE TISSUES
Ligaments
Bands of white, elastic fibres.
Attach bone to bone. They help to stabilise the joint and control the amount of movement at the joint
Tendons
White, flexible and very strong, non elastic cords
Attach muscle to bone
Cartilage
Shiny, smooth, white covering of the bone
Acts as a shock absorber and cushions the impact between the bones
TYPES OF MOVEMENT
Flexion
Decreasing the angle of a joint, the bending of a limb
Bicep curl
Extension
Increasing the angle of a joint, straightening the limb
Shot put
Abduction
The movement of a limb away from the midline of the body
Jumping out into a star jump
Adduction
The movement of the limb towards the midline of the body
The breast stroke entering the glide phase
Rotation
The bone moves freely in a curve
Turning your head to breathe in the front crawl
MUSCLES WORK IN PAIRS
Agonist
Working muscle that contracts to create movement
Bicep in a bicep curl
Antagonist
The ralaxing muscle to allow the movement to be created
Tricep in a bicep curl
Origin
The end of the muscle attached to the stationary bone
Bicep connected to the scapula
Insertion
The end of the muscle attached to the moving bone
Bicep connected to the radius
Antagonistic muscle action
