Resumo de Recurso

Electrolysis
  1. The process where ionic substances are broken down into simpler substances using electricity.
    1. For it to work, ions must be free to move
      1. Ions are free to move when molten or dissolved in water
      2. For example if electricity is passed through molten lead bromide
        1. Lead bromide is broken down to from lead and bromine
      3. The process
        1. Positively charged ions move to the negative electrode
          1. Receive electrons (reduced)
          2. Negatively charged ions move to the positive electrode
            1. Lose electrons (oxidised)
            2. The substance that is broken down is called the 'electrolyte'
