Only some trees are felled- most trees
are left standing. This is less damaging to
the forest as if only a few trees are
taken the overall forest structure is kept-
the canopys still thee and soil isnt
exposed so forest can regenerate
Least damaging forms are
'horse logging and 'helicopter
logging'- dragging felled trees
out of forest with
horses/helicopters instead of
huge trucks
REPLANTING
New trees are planted
to replace cut down
ones
meaning trees for people
to use in future
Important the same types of tree that
was cut is planted to keep variety
EDUCATION
Some people aren't
aware of environmental
impacts of deforesation
Local people try to make
money the short term (e.g
illegal logging)
Educating them about
impacts/ways to reduce their
impacts and also alternative
ways to make money that don't
damage environment
REDUCING DEMAND
FOR HARD WOOD
Hard wood is a general
term for word from certain
tree types
Fairly dense and
hard- used to make
things like furniture
High demand for hardwood in richer countries
tropical hardwood trees are becoming rarer-
some richer countries are trying to reduce
demand
Strategies to reduce deamnd include heavily
taxing importted hardwood or banning its
sale
Some ocuntries with tropical
rainforesrs also ban logging of
hardwood species
PROTECTION
Environmental laws can be used to protect
rainforests:
Laws that ban illegal logging
Laws that ban logging of some tree
species e.g mahogany
Many countries have set up
national parks and nature reserves
within rainforests. In these areas
damaging activites e,g logging are
restricted.
REDUCING DEBT
Poorer countries often borrow money from richer
countries or organistations to fund development
schemes or cope with emergencies like floods- this
money has to be paid back
These countries often lalow
logging/farming/mining in
raindorests to make money to pay
back the debt
By reducing the debt would mean
they wouldn't have to do this and
the rainforests would be
conserved
ECOTOURISM
Tourism that doesn't
harm the environment
and benefits the local
people
source of income for
local people- guides,
provide accomation
etc- dont have to log
or farm to make
money
