Proctor and Elizabeth remain rather distant throughout this scene. There is a somewhat tense and unrelaxed atmosphere. They interact with cold and basic questions and answers. Their is no real loving connection between them.

Proctor is paranoid that Elizabeth judges him for his sin, However, she tells him that only he is judging himself, therefore the only way for him to be rid of his guilt is to forgive himself.
Act IV

In contrast to Act II, the emotional connection between Proctor and Elizabeth is now very clear and significant.
