Close Reading.
Imagery
1. quote an example of the imagery being used
2. say what type of imagery is being used (simile, metaphor, personfication)
3. identify the two elements being compared
4. explain what the two elments have in common
5. say why the comparison is effective
6. link back to the original question
Tone
1. identify the tone
2. quote from the passage
3. explain in-depth how your quote creates your stated mood or tone
4. this will most likely focus on word choice, punctuation and sentence structure
Linking
1. state that the sentence links back to whats previously been said and quote the part of the sentence that links back
2. quote the information previously given to make this clear
3. state that the sentence links forward to introduce what will be discussed next and quote the part of the sentence that links forward
4. quote the information that is later introduced to make this clear
Word Choice
1. quote the word and give its basic meaning
2. give the words connotations
3. explain how the words connotations develop the readers understanding of the passage
Sentence Structure
1. identify the type of sentence
2. mention if the sentence is a long complex setence or a short/simple one
3. identify if the word is inversed/different to create a particular effect
4. is there a list?
5. is there repetition of words within the sentence?
6. is there a climax in the sentence?
7. look a parts of the speech
8. look at the tense
9. does this sentence include parenthesis?
10. is the sentence written in first or third person?
11. comment on the punctuation used as this effects the structure
Contrast
1. identify the contrast in your words
2. use headings to to show the 2 contrasting ideas
3. identify quotes which will illustrate the difference/contrast/change
4. analyse how these quotes show a contrast
5. look for other words which will illustrate contrast
6. look out for a change in tense
7. comment on how these words make a difference clear
