external factors and girls achievement
1. the influence of feminism- laws and changes
2. changing perception- FRANCIS, found that girls now have higher career aspirations therefore need educational qualifications.
changes int he family, increase divorce rate- more opportunities and motivation to do well.
internal factors and girls achievement
equal opportunity policy- boys and girls can now have the same subject choice in the national curriculum (1988)
role models- more female teachers which act as a role mode for females
coursework MITISOS AND BROWNIE, girls do better than boys in coursework as they are more organised.
teacher attention- boys need more attention therefore they are disciplined more harshly.
boys underachievement
1. literacy- parents spend less time reading to boys as this is seen as a female activity. boys lea sure activities do not promote literacy .
2. feminisation of schooling. SEWELL argues that boys fall behind because schools have become feminised. 1 in 6 primary school teachers are male
3. lack of a male role model, increase of lone parent families means that boys do not see the importance elf qualifications.
