Teens feel like they are more popular with social media and that they are less anxious. The number of kids on Facebook is low. Facebook is out of the graces of teens. It is more used by adults. They mostly use Snapchat and Instagram as there main source of social media.
It's is said that social media all lead to increased feelings of depression, poor body image, anxiety, and loneliness. Teens are doing a lot of communication online and face to face, instead person to person. They are online for hours, even when they are doing their homework. Before phones everyone was keeping busy by hanging out at the mall or talking on the phone.
If you have a problem, big or small, talking with someone helps you get through it.
Eating disorders are another thing that is a bad impact on teens. It even affects young adults as well. For them it is lack of sleep and and symptoms of depression. Some things that are good are that you can connect with your friends and be able to talk with family that is far away. Teens that are struggling with mental health can talk to kids with the same problem and can lean on each other even tho they are half way across the world
Other symptoms are inadequacy and jealousy of other people online. As well as depression. If you are not already having a good day then seeing other people doing things that look happy makes you have an even worse day. Same if you have a negative feeling of life. People only post their most happy pics when they are jealous or depressed.
Sitting is the new smoking. Lots of people are dying because they spend so much time sitting and scrolling on their phones. Cyberbullying and Facebook depression of jealousy of other people who look happier than you. It's addictive and there is a withdrawal after they stop using it. This is for all internet (not just social media). Triggers more sadness and less well-being.
Instead of looking at other social media pages you can be making yourself happy and having fun. We can't connect with people and because we are glued to the screens we don't see the outside world much. You feel left out when your friends post that they went to a great party and you realize you weren't invited. People think you are all cupcakes and rainbows when really you are in the underworld surrounded by monsters and demons. Because you are online so much your brain tells you that you aren't good enough and that everyone is better than you. When you have anxiety and you feel like you understand it makes you realize that you don't. You are always falling apart at home and are holding yourself together at school and out in public. You always feel like you drowning in all the guilt and sorrow. You always feel like your not good enough no matter what you do. People don't see your anxiety and other problems like you do. You are always feeling guilty because you can't get the perfect picture. You don't much sleep because your phone light keeps you awake because you use it before going to bed.
95% say they have access or have a smartphone. 45% say they are online almost al the time. Facebook is no longer a dominate platform for teens. Teens use Snapchat and Instagram. People who come from lower income will use Facebook more than the high income teens. Teens have mixed views on what the internet does to them. Social Media opens up more opportunities with bullying and more mean things. More access to a smartphone than a laptop or computer. Use on internet is near constant. Lots of kids will play video games of any kind.
Social media gets teens addicted and also results in cyberbullying and suicide. Teens don't realize that it is infecting their life negatively. Teens hardly ever or never silence or turn off their phones. Not very many kids like talking in person with their friends and only do it online within social media where you don't get the true message. Hate speech is more common than cyberbullying. Kids are vulnerable because they share everything online and people could break into their house when they are not around.
Social Media effects who kids and teens hang out with and the group they are apart of. Sometimes if you have geeky friends on the internet the popular kids will think you are a geek too. It also effects how they act and what they develop through their participation with social media. Use of social media is related to self-esteem and well-being.
