New public health movement, Baum:is that if public heath action is to be effective then there is a need to build on the changes that have been taking place over the past decade in moving towards the new public health approach. A shift away from the predominance of the medical model towards the socio-environmental model of public health is the one most likely to achieve genuine, sustainable health improvement. Based firmly on the social model of public health, the author gives a comprehensive overview of the historical development of public health ideology and practice as well as the implications for the future and places this in the context of the Australian experience.
