Golden rice is a genetically modified rice that has been modified to contain beta-carotene, a source of vitamin A. A single bowl of rice can supply 60% of a child's daily requirement of vitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is prevalent among the poor whose diets are based mainly on rice. In 2012 250 million preschool children were affected by VAD. Advantages: Golden Rice - increased crop yields and less pesticide use Could prevent 9000 new cases of blindness and 950 deaths per year in the Philippines caused by VAD More nutritious Supplies 60% of a child's daily requirement of VItamin A in a single bowl May increase economy by reducing disease and mortality incidents saving the Philippines around $137 million Disadvantages: People argue that the nutrient value of golden rice is not enough to help alleviate VAD If used on a large scale it can make malnutrition worse because it encourages a diet based on a single staple food Commercialisation may subject it to increased tax making it more expensive than regular rice
