Insert the correct prepositions and postpositions where necessary. 1. Sandra was [blank_start]in[blank_end] bed. She waited [blank_start]for[blank_end] the postman to arrive. While she lay there she was thinking [blank_start]about[blank_end]/[blank_start]over[blank_end] the application she had made [blank_start]for[blank_end] the scholarship. Suddenly she got [blank_start]up[blank_end], put [blank_start]on[blank_end] her dressing gown and went [blank_start]to[blank_end] the bathroom. While she was having a shower she heard the postman. He knocked [blank_start]at[blank_end]/[blank_start]on[blank_end] the door and her mother opened it. When Sandra entered [blank_start]-[blank_end] the breakfast room, a letter was lying [blank_start]on[blank_end] the table. 2. I'm a member [blank_start]of[blank_end] a group who spend weekends looking [blank_start]after[blank_end] footpaths, building walls and planting trees. We are not paid [blank_start]for[blank_end] what we do but we enjoy it very much. You don't need any previous experience but it helps if you are fond [blank_start]of[blank_end] gardening. The most attractive thing about it is that you meet [blank_start]-[blank_end]/[blank_start]with[blank_end] other people interested [blank_start]in[blank_end] nature and preserving the countryside. 3. We were late as usual. My husband had insisted [blank_start]on[blank_end] doing his packing [blank_start]by[blank_end] himself, and when he discovered that he couldn't manage he'd asked me [blank_start]for[blank_end] help [blank_start]at[blank_end] the last moment. So we had an hour to get [blank_start]to[blank_end] the airport. Luckily, there wasn't much traffic [blank_start]on[blank_end] the road and we were able to get there just [blank_start]on[blank_end] time. 4. Archeologists and historians are more and more worried [blank_start]about[blank_end] the Italian city [blank_start]of[blank_end] Venice, one [blank_start]of[blank_end] the world's most important historical cities. Venice, built [blank_start]in[blank_end] the seventeenth century [blank_start]by[blank_end] the Doges of Venice, is visited [blank_start]by[blank_end] more than one million people [blank_start]-[blank_end] a year. But Venice's buildings are [blank_start]in[blank_end] danger. Their foundations are shaken [blank_start]by[blank_end] the vibrations [blank_start]from[blank_end] passing ships. Many parts [blank_start]of[blank_end] the city are often flooded and these floods cause damage too. Worried residents and experts [blank_start]from[blank_end] all over the world are looking [blank_start]for[blank_end] ways to stop the damage and preserve Venice. 5. Unexpected guests are good [blank_start]for[blank_end] you. The phone rings, the friends you haven't seen [blank_start]for[blank_end] ages are arriving [blank_start]in[blank_end] a few hours, and you realize [blank_start]in[blank_end] horror that you haven't changed the sheets [blank_start]in[blank_end] the spare bedrooms [blank_start]for[blank_end] months, that all the dirty dishes have been [blank_start]in[blank_end] the sink [blank_start]since[blank_end] the weekend, and that you've been wearing the same frock [blank_start]for[blank_end] three days. 6. Last year I went [blank_start]on[blank_end] a trip which was an absolute disaster. I was going [blank_start]to[blank_end] Berlin [blank_start]on[blank_end] business when, [blank_start]by[blank_end] accident, I got [blank_start]on[blank_end] the wrong train. We were [blank_start]on[blank_end] the way [blank_start]to[blank_end] Brussels before I realized my mistake. [blank_start]In[blank_end] the end I got [blank_start]to[blank_end] Berlin twenty-four hours later than I had expected. 7. Last year my family went [blank_start]on[blank_end] holiday [blank_start]to[blank_end] Thailand. We went [blank_start]by[blank_end] air; it was a very long journey but we were very well looked [blank_start]after[blank_end] [blank_start]on[blank_end] the plane [blank_start]by[blank_end] all the stewardesses. We stayed [blank_start]in[blank_end] a large hotel [blank_start]on[blank_end] the outskirts of Bangkok. We were given a wonderful suite [blank_start]on[blank_end] the top floor [blank_start]of[blank_end] the hotel. The most enjoyable day I had was when we went [blank_start]on[blank_end] a trip [blank_start]by[blank_end] boat, down the river to the crocodile farm. We had a wonderful holiday. 8. If you are going [blank_start]to[blank_end] a shopping centre, make sure you have already decided which shops you want to visit. This will help to cut [blank_start]down[blank_end] on the time you have to spend [blank_start]on[blank_end] your shopping trip as well as keeping you [blank_start]from[blank_end] wandering around window shopping.
