    What is Indie Rock?
    Indie Rock is an alternative genre, usually associated with vintage appearances as well as the rock side of the genre portraying darkness. This genre has had big influences of upcoming trends. Their music videos usually feature more live performances than narrative because they usually perform for themselves rather than to make money.

    1970's
    EP called Spiral Scratch by Buzzcocks was the first ever piece of music to be identified as indie due to its self publication.

    1980's
    Indie Rock became more popular. Bands such as REM and The Smiths broke into the music scene. With The Kooks being the most popular Indie band in the UK at the time and were frequently played on the radio. Some of the main Indie record labels and producers were founded, such as Dischord Records and Matador Records. The production of NME magazine, in 1986, helped the Indie music industry massively as they promoted the music genre and it's artists. Indie was seen as the main sub-genre in the UK.

    1990s
    Major bands such as Pulp, Primal Scream, Green day and Stone Roses were growing under the name of "Alternative Indie music". Indie-Rock became more popular than the previously preferred Indie-Pop. The term "Grunge" became more recognised which caused an increase in independent artists creating their own sound. In 1995, rivals Oasis and Blur released singles on the same day as each other. Blur's Country house made it to number 1 in the charts whereas Oasis' Roll With It got to second. "Brit Pop" was a sub-genre of Indie in the 1990s in the UK. There was a growth in British music and culture like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones which was strongly influenced by "Glam Rock" and "Punk Rock".

    2000's
    As a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the internet, a large amount of Indie artists began to gain popularity in the music industry. Many Indie fans continued listening to 1990's Indie Rock music which meant that Indie Music is now often associated to the sound of the 90s.
