Question 7
Question
Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod
The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is a music festival which takes place every year during the first week of July in Llangollen, North Wales. Singers and dancers from around the world are invited to take part in over twenty competitions followed each evening by concerts on the main stage. Over five thousand singers, dancers and instrumentalists from around fifty countries perform at the festival for six days. Every year more than 50,000 people come to Langollen to watch this spectacular event.
The first International Musical Eisteddfod was held in Llangollen in June 1947. In the following years, its celebration of 'Peace and Harmony' has made it one of the world's great music festivals. In 1947, International Eisteddfod hosted groups from ten foreign countries. The next few years saw many more countries participating: by 1953, when Queen Elizabeth II visited the Eisteddfod as part of her tour of Wales, singers and dancers of thirty-two nationalities had competed in Llangollen. In 1955 a choir from Italy won first prize in the male voice choir competition. Famous Luciano Pavarotti sang in that choir.
This cool cultural event is often called 'Wales's gift to the World', and it promotes peace and goodwill between nations through music and dance. The three outdoor stages host a variety of live world music and dance, folk, classical, jazz, indie, acoustic, roots, opera, Celtic reggae and rock, whilst world-class entertainment continues in the main pavilion where choirs, dancers and soloists from different nations compete for international recognition and prizes.
Enjoy a unique day out with plenty of experiences to choose from: circus skills, arts and crafts activities, dance workshops, face painting and a range of exhibitions, stalls and international food outlets. The Parade of Nations is a truly unique parade around Llangollen town! This annual vibrant carnival of cultures' features performers waving flags representing their nation. For some people, the costumes are the most exciting part. Each traditional dress has its own story.
Many people only come for the evening concerts. Each evening concert has a different theme in order to offer variety and to attract a wide audience across the week. On the Tuesday night the festival hosts the Classical Gala concert. Wednesday is the day to celebrate the music of Wales while Thursday is dedicated to music of the world. And finally, on Saturday, the prestigious Pavarotti Trophy is awarded to the Choir of the World.
