...The more They Defend Their Ideas.
Sometimes, users do not want any new information that would conflict with their personal opinions. Even if the new information may be beneficial or helpful.
This is called cognitive dissonance denial.
Slide 2
Alter your beliefs or deny the information?
Cognitive Dissonance is the uncomfortable feeling you get when two ideas conflict with each other. You don't like the feeling so there are 2 ways to get rid of it:
Change your belief
Deny one of the ideas
When forced, people will change their beliefs.
People can be forced to defend an opinion they do not believe in by changing their narrative.
Slide 3
When Not Forced, people Dig In
If presented with information that opposes your belief, but you are not forced to defend your beliefs, you will almost always deny the new information and further cement your ideals.
Ex. You believe the moon landing is not real
A news report you're watching details how the moon landing is real and shows fact and photos.
Because you are not forced to defend your belief but are still presented with new information, you may hunker down that the moon landing was fake.
Slide 4
If Uncertain, People will Argue Harder
People can be uncertain about whether or not their beliefs are true. To themselves they may have doubts. But if forced to defend those doubts people will fight back harder.
Don't spend a lot of time trying to change someone's beliefs
The best way to change someone's beliefs is to get someone to commit something very small
Don't just give people evidence that their belief is not logical, or tenable, or a good choice.
