Mass tourism (social,
economic and environmental)
- Mass tourism refers to a large number of visitors, often on package holidays
with accommodation and travel included. It can be seen in the development
and consolidation stage on Butler's tourist resort Life Cycle Model.
- Economic
- More money is earned in
foreign currency exchange
- Construction jobs go to local people
- Low-income jobs can be converted into higher
earning ones e.g. fishing boats can be used for tours
- Income from tourism/entrance fees may pay for
environmental management, conservation and repairs
- Tourists bring in money that can
transform a country's economy
- Visitor numbers are not guaranteed
and the area's popularity may decline.
