Frage Antworten
Where were Pompeii and Herculaneum located? In Campania (southern Italy), between the Sarno River and Mount Vesuvius.
Which ancient historian describes Pompeii and Herculaneum, and what did they say? Florus described Pompeii and Herculaneum as being "very fertile".
List three resources of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and their intended uses. 1. Olive oil (used for perfume, heating, and cooking). 2. Grapes (used for potent wine). 3. Fish (used mainly as fish sauce, or, 'garum').
List three key features of Pompeiian streetscapes. 1. Raised footpaths and stepping stones (made in order to avoid pedestrians stepping in overflowing sewage.) 2. Indentations in footpaths from heavy traffic. 3. Surrounded by defensive walls.
List three key features of Herculanean streetscapes. 1. The houses and villas were large (due to being solely a vacation town). 2. Possessed a sea wall with vaulted chambers. 3. The streets were paved, and not made of dirt.
What are some key features which differentiate Pompeiian streetscapes from Herculaneum? 1. While Pompeii had stepping stones, Herculaneum did not (due to a more advanced draining system.) 2. Herculaneum had a sea wall, whilst Pompeii did not. 3. Herculaneum was less congested than Pompeii, and therefore had less indentations in its footpaths.
What were the two phases of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79AD, and what did each phase do? 1. The Plinian phase expelled large amounts of pumice and ash into the air. 2. The Pelean phase released hot avalanches of gas.
Evaluate Pliny the Younger's interpretation of the eruption. Pliny described the eruption as resembling a "pine tree". Although his letter to Tacitus is the main source pertaining to the eruption, it isn't too reliable for two reasons. 1. It was written 25 years after the event. 2. The purpose of the letters was to glorify the heroics of his uncle, not to describe the event.
