What is rheumatology? Prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders.
Name 3 of the key musculoskeletal conditions we need to know. Any from: gout, ankylosing spondylitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, slipped disc, hip problems and knee problems.
What is gout? What are the main symptoms? Gout is recurrent attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis. It results in a red, tender, hot and swollen joint. It usually occurs at the base of the big toe.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome? What are some of the main symptoms? Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve. Symptoms are paresthesia, pain and numbness in the hand and tingling/burning in the thumb, index, middle and half of the radial fingers.
Where in the spinal cord do herniated discs normally occur? What are some of the symptoms associated with them? Normally in lower weight bearing regions - lower part of lumbar spine. Symptoms include sciatica/shooting pains in the leg. Often caused by heavy lifting.
What are some of the major signs of musculoskeletal problems? Any from: attitude, swelling (at site), muscle wasting, deformity, skin changes, tenderness, reduced movement, increased warmth, less muscle strength, stability, function loss, crepitus
What is crepitus? Cracking noise under skin/joints. Often one of the signs of musculoskeletal problems.
What are some of the symptoms of musculoskeletal problems? pain, stiffness, loss of function, swelling, atrophy, disability, systemic illness, sleep disturbance
What is inflammation? A complex response by vascular tissues to protect the organ from harmful stimuli. It is an innate immune response.
What is rheumatoid arthritis? Is it more likely in men or women and what is the average age of onset? Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory autoimmune disease that mainly attacks synovial joints. Women are three times more likely than men to get it and average age of onset it between 40-50.
What is osteoarthritis? What are some of the major symptoms? Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease leading to degradation of joints and loss of cartilage. Symptoms include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness and locking.
What are some of the types/causes of lower back pain? What percentage of the population will experience this at some point. Inflammatory, mechanical, neurological. 65-80% of the population.
