What is democracy? Democracy is the rule of the people
Was Athens always a Democracy? No, it originally had a monarchy but after time was deamed that the Kings had no interest in taking care of the people.
Who was in charge of the Democratic Athens? There were three main political bodies that ruled Athens. The Assembly, the Council and the Courts
What was the Assembly? The assembly was part of the ruling body of Athens. It was usually made up of 6000 people. The assembly was not elected, but came when they chose. It was considered a duty to any men of Athens as they were not payed to go. The officials of the democracy were elected by the Assembly.
What was the council? The presidency of the boule. This positioned rotated between the ten tribes in Athens every month (there were ten months in an Athenian year)
What were the Courts? The Courts are the groups that control the legal system in Athens. These groups are called juries. The people within them are known as judges. They are split into two types, the dikes (the smaller kind) or private suit and the graphe (larger kind) or public suit.
How did voting work in Ancient Athens? Only citizens could vote. To be a citizen, you have to have been registered by one of the four (later ten) tribes
