Question | Answer |
Types of natural hazards | Hurricane, Volcanoes, Tsunami, Flood, Avalanches, Earthquakes |
Layers of the earth | Crust, Mantle, Outer core, Inner core |
Convection currents | Heat moving |
What do we call the movement of tectonic plates? | Continental Drift |
What currents move the Earth's tectonic plates? | Heat from the decaying core |
Crust | Thinnest layer, Rock outside of Earth |
Mantle | Thickest layer, Rock= Hot and Molten |
Outer core | 2nd thickest, Rock is molten |
Inner core | Very hot, Made of solid metal |
What is the name of 'super continent' that existed 200 million years ago? | Pangea |
Convection Currents | Occurs in the Mantle. The Mantle gets heated up due to the heat of the Earth's Core. The convection currents are hot, which means they will rise to the top, once they get there they will cool back down and sink. This continues to happen and moves the tectonic plates. |
Tectonic hazards | Occur on plate boundaries |
Continental plate | Thickest, Less dense, Oldest, Granite |
Oceanic plate | Thinnest, More dense, Newest, Basalt |
Retrofitting | Retro-Old Fitting-Put on |
How can we measure Earthquakes? | Using the Richter scale |
5 Factors affecting the death toll of Earthquakes | Time of day, Depth of focus, Time of year, Location of epicentre, Associated hazard (Tsunami) |
What are the 2 types of Earthquakes? | Shield and Composite |
Shield volcano | Less viscous and occur at constructive plate boundaries |
Composite volcano | More viscous, occur at destructive plate boundaries |
Features of an Earthquake | Volcanic bombs, Ash cloud, Pyroclastic flow, Crater, Main vent, Lava flow, Magma chamber, Secondary vent, Secondary cone |
