Question Answer
What are the (4) muscles of the scalp? frontalis occipitalis 2x temporalis (on the sides)
Which muscle of the scalp is an esthetician most concerned about? frontalis
What is the frontalis (muscle) and what does it do? frontalis: - scalp muscle - raises eyebrows - draws scalp forward - causes wrinkles in the forehead
What is the occipitalis (muscle) and what does it do? occipitalis: - back of the epicranius - draws the scalp backward
What are the temporalis (muscles) and what do they do? temporalis: - sides of the epicranius - as one of the "chewing muscles", aids in mastication by coordinating with the masseter to open and close the mouth and bring the jaw forward or backward
What is the epicranius (muscle)? epicranius: (aka "occipitofrontalis") - broad muscle that covers the top of the skull - consists of the occipitalis and frontalis
What is the corrugator (muscle) and what does it do? corrugator: - an eyebrow muscle located beneath the frontalis and orbicularis oculi. - draws the eyebrow down and wrinkles the forehead vertically
What is the orbicularis oculi (muscle) and what does it do? orbicularis oculi: - an eyebrow muscle that is the ring of the eye socket - it closes the eyes
What is the levator palpebrae superioris (muscle) and what does it do? levator palpebrae superioris: - an eyebrow muscle that controls the eyelid and can be easily damaged during makeup applicattion.
What are the (3) muscles of the ear? the (3) muscles of the ear are called "auricularis muscles"
What are the auricularis (muscles) and what do they do? auricularis: - 3 muscles of the ear - they work together to move the ear upward, forward or backward
What are the (3) muscles of the eyebrow? corrugator orbicularis oculi levator palpebrae superioris muscle
What are the (2) primary muscles of the nose? procerus nasalis
What does the procerus (muscle) on the nose do? procerus: - lowers the eyebrows and causes wrinkles across the bridge of the nose.
What does the nasalis (muscle) on the nose do? nasalis -a two-part muscle that covers the nose and includes the "transverse" part and the "alar" part, which flair the nostrils.
What do the corrugator and procerus (muscles) make up and why is this important for estheticians? corrugator + procerus = glabella these are the muscles that are often injected with the neuromodulator, Botox, to stop frowning. A neuromodulator inhibits a muscle's movements.
What is the buccinator (muscle) and what does it do? buccinator: - an important mouth muscle that is a thin, flat muscle of the cheek between the upper and lower jaw - compresses the cheeks and expels air, as in when blowing a whistle
What is the triangularis (muscle) and what does it do? triangularis: aka "depressor anguli oris" - an important mouth muscle - extends alongside the chin - pulls down the corners of the mouth
What is the depressor anguli oris (muscle) and what does it do? depressor anguli oris: aka triangularis - an important mouth muscle - extends alongside the chin - pulls down the corners of the mouth
What is the mentalis (muscle) and what does it do? mentalis - an important mouth muscle - elevates the lower lip and raises + wrinkles the skin of the chin
What is the orbicularis oris (muscle) and what does it do? orbicularis oris: - an important mouth muscle - flat band around the upper and lower lips - compresses, contracts, puckers, and wrinkles the lips
What is the levator anguli oris (muscle) and what does it do? levator anguli oris: - an important mouth muscle - associated w/ smiling
What is the risorius (muscle) and what does it do? risorius: - an important mouth muscle - draws the corners of the mouth out + back when grinning
What is the levator labii superioris (muscle) and what does it do? levator labii superioris: also "quadratus labii superioris" - an important mouth muscle - associated with lifting the wings of the nose and upper lip
What is the quadratus labii superioris (muscle) and what does it do? quadratus labii superioris aka "levator labii superioris" - an important mouth muscle - associated with lifting the wings of the nose and upper lip
What is the zygomaticus major and minor (muscles) and what do they do? zygomaticus major and minor: - important mouth muscles - muscle that extend fromt he zygomatic bone to the angle of the mouth - work together to elevate the lip, as in laughing
What are the main muscles of mastication? masseter temporalis
What is the masseter (muscle) and what does it do? masseter: - as one of the "chewing muscles", aids in mastication by coordinating with the masseter to open and close the mouth and bring the jaw forward or backward
What do the masseter and temporalis (muscles) make up and why is this important for estheticians? masseter + temporalis = the "chewing muscles" estheticians need to know the location of these muscles when performing facial massage and electrical modality treatments
What are the (2) muscles of the neck? platysma sternocleidomastoid
What is the platysma (muscle) and what does it do? platysma: - a neck muscle that is broad and extends from the chest and shoulder muscles to the side of the chin - lowers the lower jaw and lip
What is the sternocleidomastoid (muscle) and what does it do? sternocleidomastoid: - a neck muscle - extends from the ear to the collarbone - rotates the head from side to side and up and down
What is the latissimus dorsi (muscle) and what does it do? latissimus dorsi: - a back muscle - a large, flat, triangular muscle that covers the lower back; it comes from the lower 1/2 of the vertebral column and iliac crest (hip bone) and narrows to a rounded tendon attached to the front of the upper part of the humerus - attaches the arm to the body
What is the pectoralis major and minor (muscles) and what does it do? pectoralis major and minor: - muscles of the chest that assist the swinging movements of the arm - attaches the arm to the body
