Making Esters | Esterification - making an Ester by reacting a Carboxylic Acid with an Alcohol. Esters can also be made by reacting an Anhydride with an alcohol |
Hydrolysing esters (alcohol) | Esters can be hydrolysed using water and an acid catalyst. (this takes them back into their constituent alcohol and carboxylic acid). |
Hydrolysing Esters (Alkali) | Esters can be broken down using Aqueous NaOH. This breaks the Ester down into an alcohol and a carboxylic salt (CooNa) instead of COOH) |
