What ions do metal atoms form? Positive.
What ions do non-metals form? Negative.
What are the strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions called? Ionic bonds.
What does the loss or gain of electrons do to the atoms? It completes the highest energy level.
What happens when metals ionize? They lose electron(s) and become positively charged ions.
What happens when non-metals ionize? They gain electrons from other atoms and become negatively charged.
How do you work out how many charges are on an ion formed by a metal? It's equal to the group number of the metal.
How do you work out how many charges are on an ion formed by a non-metal? It's equal to the group number minus eight.
