Warlords forced to surrender
Communist-Guomindang split (1927)
After they conquered all the south and some of the north, relationship broke down: different aims
Shanghai Massacre (1927)
As Chiang went to attack Shanghai, communists inside led a rebellion against the warlord and gained power
Chiang arrived a few days later and killed all the communists
1000 arrested, 300 executed, 5,000 missing
All communists in Guangzhou also killed
Communists retreated to Jiangxi and Hunan provinces in countryside
