There are five major nutrients in our food. Carbohydrates - Sugar - Jam, Honey, Table Sugar - Provides energy. Starch - Potatoes, Bread, Rice, Cereals - Provides energy. Fibre - Bran, Vegetables - Prevents Constipation Fats - Butter, Fatty Meat, Cheese - Provides energy and heat insulation. Proteins - Lean Meat, Fish, Eggs, Nuts - For growth and repair of cells. Vitamins - Vitamin C - Water Soluble - Citrus fruits (oranges etc) - For healthy skin and gums. Vitamin D - Fat Soluble - Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt - For strong bones. Minerals - Calcium - Milk, Cheese, Tinned Salmon - For strong, healthy bones. Iron - Liver, Cabbage, Spinach - To make red blood cells. Starch - Add iodine - Turns blue/blackProtein - Add copper sulfate and sodium hydroxide - Turns violetReducing sugars - Add Benedict's solution and heat - Turns brick-redFats- Rub on brown paper - Leaves a translucent spot
