Tang and Song Dynasties

Background of China before the Tang Dynasty Han dynasty collapsed in 220 A.D China remained divided for nearly 400 years. Dynasties rose and fell Last dynasty before the Tang was the Sui dynasty (589-618)

Tang Taizong Son of Tang's first emperor, Li Yaun. Also known as Li Shimin. With his father lead a revolt at 16 years old while the Sui dynasty was crumbling Compelled his father to step down leaving him to take the throne. Became China's most admired emperor.

Status of women Called to run family affairs. Managed servants and family finances Had to pay a dowry in marriage Footbinding emerged during the song dynasty (feet of young girls were bound with long strips of cloth, producing lily shaped feet.) This practice became a symbol or beauty and nobility.

Comparing and contrasting the Tang and Song dynasties Tang dynsty was established 1st, the civil service exam was only offered to the wealthy, and contained/owned more territory. Song dynasty ruled longer, had reoccurring invaders from the north, far more achievments, and offered the civil service exam to anyone. Both dynasties involved an increase in trade and flourishing of painting and poetry
